Yellow-Legged Hornet Surveying
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDACS) has notified the Association that staff will be working in Brookhaven as part of an effort to locate and eradicate yellow-legged hornet nests.
Surveying will primarily take place along the Brookhaven Walking Trail, but staff may also be examining trees and other vegetation along:
- Camrose Crossing Lane
- Delacourt Lane
- Doverstone Court
- Stanbury Drive
- Delamere Drive
If a yellow-legged hornet nest is located, NCDACS will coordinate treatment with insecticides and remove the nest.
There are currently more than 200 monitoring traps placed throughout the Matthews area—not just within Brookhaven—to help determine where these hornets are present so nests can be located and eradicated.
For homeowners, there is no need for alarm. According to NCDACS, yellow-legged hornets are primarily attracted to bees and other insects, not people. As always, please use normal caution when outdoors. Their nests are typically found high in trees and are brownish in color.
The walking trail will remain open during this work.
If you see one of the monitoring traps, please do not touch or disturb it. State personnel conducting the surveys will be wearing safety vests or orange shirts and will be traveling in marked North Carolina state vehicles.
If you believe you have seen a yellow-legged hornet or have located a possible nest, please do not approach it. If it is safe to do so, take a photograph from a distance and report it directly to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
